In this episode of expert's voice, our Post-War & Contemporary Art Advisor Peter van Beveren tells us the story behind this 1952 pastel drawing by Japanese contemporary artist Yayoi Kusama. This drawing is up for sale in our current Post-War & Contemporary Art Sale of 28 April.
This unique work of art from the beginning of her career is an early example of her visual language. Kusama’s distinctive imagery springs from the recurring hallucinations that have haunted her since childhood but which she uses to great effect. In her hallucinations the world appeared as covered by dots and repetitive shapes, like an infinite starry sky. We are delighted to be able to off er this work, especially taking into consideration that Yayoi Kusama’s early history is tied to The Hague through her exhibitions in the Orez International Gallery.
