Old Masters, Nineteenth Century & Early Modern Art | 17, 18 & 21 November 2021

Our team has again succeeded in bringing together high-quality works. In the Old Masters section of the catalogue you will find landscapes by Frederik de Moucheron, Joos de Momper II, still lifes by Bartolomeus Assteyn and Melchior d’Hondecoeter. An exceptional work is that of Cleopatra with snake, attributed to the Italian artist Elisabetta Sirani.

In the Nineteenth Century & Early Modern Art section, the Romantic period is strongly
represented with a landscape by Andreas Schelfhout and with works by various pupils of this great master. Schelfhout is probably surpassed by two of his greatest pupils, the masterful romanticist Wynand Nuijen with an uber-romantic beachscape and a rural French village view by the painter who is regarded as the pioneer of French Impressionism, Johan Bartold Jongkind. Letzten Augenblicke der Girondisten’ by the German painter Carl Theodor von Piloty is of international allure.

Although of an entirely different order, but also internationally attractive is Pieter de Josselin de Jong’s painting of an interior with children of a distinguished Hague family enjoying themselves within a rich ambience. A work that can compete with the great Salon painters from Paris and Brussels.

The Hague School, with classics such as Hendrik Willem Mesdag, Johan Hendrik Weissenbruch, Paul Gabriel and Anton Mauve, supplemented by later exponents such as Floris Arntzenius and Johannes Evert Akkeringa, Willem Witsen and George Hendrik Breitner, Cornelis Vreedenburgh and Johan Christiaan Karel Klinkenberg embellish the requisite pages of this catalogue.

We are offering two watercolours by Jan Toorop, powerful figure pieces that show the master’s artistry and passion and an intimate early oil painting. A Fauvist watercolour of a coastal scene by Raoul Dufy is also appealing.

The collection of works by Harm Kamerlingh Onnes, the master of the anecdotal, will delight enthusiasts. The collection will be offered partly in the salesroom auction and partly in the online-only auction.

We look forward to welcoming you to our exhibition rooms from 9 through 15 November, whether in person or online at our auction house at Nobelstraat 5, The Hague.
