The Lucassen Collection

THE LUCASSEN COLLECTION

Venduehuis The Hague is proud to announce the auction The Lucassen Collection, in which a significant part of the private collection of artist Lucassen will up for auction. The collection includes almost 250 lots. The live hammer auction is planned for 24 April at Pulchri Studio at Lange Voorhout 15, in The Hague. The viewing days will be at Venduehuis The Hague, from 18 to 22 April.

‘As an artist, I experience a different perspective when viewing art. Instead of looking at art, art looks at me. This interaction leads to a different point of view on the artist ánd their work. This has been crucial for the creation of my art collection,’ says Lucassen.

The artist Lucassen, who will also celebrate his 85th birthday in April, has inspired the art world for decades with his expressive and colourful paintings. Besides his career as artist, he is also well-known as a dedicated collector. His own collection includes works of famed contemporaries such as Roger Raveel, Maryan, Willem Hussem, Etienne Elias, Lucebert and Penck. Other artists whose work can be found in this collection are pop art artists Tom Wesselmann and Jim Dine, and classical artists like James Ensor and Jean Brusselmans.

Futhermore, the auction offers an extensive selection of artworks, including Tribal Art from New Guinea, Africa, and paintings by successful Aboriginal Australian artist Emily Kame Kngwarreye. The rare etchings by Dutch artist Willem van Genk show Lucassen’s love for outsider art.

‘During his search, Lucassen was inspired by a broad array of art forms. This led to a diverse mix of styles, varying from New Figuration and surrealism to symbolism and many more. This makes the collection unique and offers an interesting insight into Lucassen’s own unique, creative vision,’ says Peter van Beveren, expert Modern & Contemporary Art at Venduehuis The Hague.

Lucassen has exhibited nationally and internationally and had regular expositions at Galerie Espace in Amsterdam. Alongside his expositions, he also worked as a teacher at the Painting department at the AKI in Enschede in the 70s. Lucassen has always been extremely knowledgeable about art and possesses an authentic point of view on the art world. Although he has focused on painting, he always walked his own path, disregarding the strict artistic trends.

‘This unique and diverse art collection reflects Lucassen’s artistic journey and his passion for art in all its forms. However, the collection has also been highly influential on his own work. It invites to see the art from a different perspective and to enjoy the treasury of artistic expressions Lucassen has collected,’ adds Manuela Sommeregger, expert Modern & Contemporary Art at Venduehuis The Hague.
