The tremendous success of our auction The M.C. Escher Sale: Collection W.F. Veldhuysen once again highlights the admiration for the Netherlands’ most iconic graphic artist. During our live auction, Escher’s masterpieces—famous for their optical illusions—were enthusiastically bid upon.
One of the highlights was the lithograph Ant (lot: 519), which attracted great excitement among bidders. This signed and numbered piece ultimately sold for an impressive €140,000, far exceeding its estimated price. Other renowned works, such as Belvedere (lot: 505) and Sky and Water II (lot: 527), were also highly appreciated by our buyers, achieving hammer prices of €36,000 and €44,000 respectively.
In addition to the live auction, we held an Online Only auction, referred to as Part II. This offered not only Escher’s works but also drawings and lithographs by his mentor, Samuel Jessurun de Mesquita. A particularly sought-after item was a 1954 catalog from the Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam featuring Escher’s exhibition, complete with Escher’s own handwritten notes (lot: 593). This unique piece sold for €6,000
Another remarkable work by Samuel Jessurun de Mesquita, possibly a self-portrait (lot: 600), also captured attention and found a new owner for a hammer price of €6,000.
