Expert’s Voice | Fine Chinese kesi robe at auction

A garment fit for an emperor: our colleague Dongdong Zhang presents a fine Chinese kesi robe, decorated with five-clawed dragons, and discusses the art of “Kesi”, the technique that is responsible for the wonderful, intricate patterns on the robe.

 

This garment, along with Asian porcelain, paintings, sculptures and other works of art, was sold during our Arts of the East: Asian Ceramics & Works of Art auction on June 15th 2022.

 

19th century, China

A superb condition large antique blue silk ground kesi-woven garment, featuring nine dragons on a busy background including bats and other auspicious symbols, the garment is heavily embellished with gold thread.
